Donald Trump launched TrumpRx, a website offering major discounts on drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, insulin, inhalers, and IVF medicines.

The Donald Trump administration on Friday announced sweeping price cuts for some of the most expensive prescription drugs in the United States, unveiling a new government-hosted website called TrumpRx that it says will connect Americans to sharply discounted medications.

At a White House event, Trump rattled off a series of promised reductions, insisting pharmaceutical companies had agreed to slash prices on weight-loss drugs, insulin, inhalers and fertility treatments.

“You will see dramatic reductions in the cost of popular weight loss drugs known as GLP-1s. [Danish multinational pharmaceutical company] Novo Nordisk will be slashing the price as an example of Ozempic from more than $1,000 to $199. And the price of Wegovy from more than $1,300 to $199. Nobody can even believe it, a 578 per cent difference," Trump said.

He continued, “Eli Lilly, who’s been very helpful to us in getting this done, will be cutting the cost of its common insulin drug and medication from $200 to $25. Nobody can believe it, $200 to $25."

“AstraZeneca is slashing the price of a common inhaler from $458 to $51, a difference of nearly 800 per cent. And we’re also delivering historic discounts for couples struggling with infertility as EMD Serrano will dramatically cut the cost of its most common IVF drugs," the US President said.

Trump singled out the fertility medication Gonal-F as an example, saying, “a single dose of the most common IVF drug in the country will plummet from the highest price in the developed world that we paid."

“The United States was subsidising everybody. We paid the highest to the lowest price in the world, which we’ll be demonstrating very shortly," he added.

He closed his remarks by saying, “We have some very talented people coming up and showing you how it’s going to work and how the website works. All of these discounts and more will be available directly to consumers starting today at trumprx.gov."

WHAT TRUMPRX DOES

According to the Associated Press, TrumpRx is not itself an online pharmacy.

Instead, the site acts as a facilitator, directing users to manufacturers’ direct-to-consumer platforms and offering coupons that can be presented at pharmacies.

The site includes a disclaimer that the listed figures represent “out-of-pocket" prices and “may be even lower" for people with insurance. Some consumers may already pay less through coverage or by using generic drugs.

According to the Associated Press, more than 40 medications are listed at launch, including weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

“You’re going to save a fortune," Trump said at the unveiling, according to AP. “And this is also so good for overall health care."

The administration has framed the initiative as part of a broader effort to counter voter frustration over rising costs ahead of November’s midterm elections.
