A total of 1,500 tonnes of onion procured from farmers by the Markfed were auctioned off at the Kurnool market yard.
Joint Collector B. Navya, who supervised the auction, said that retailers, hoteliers, wholesale dealers and others purchased 1,500 tonnes in total. On Saturday, 800 metric tonnes of onion were sold to hotels and others for a rate ranging from ₹50 to ₹450 per quintal, while 700 metric tonnes were sold for a price ranging from ₹30 to ₹900 per quintal on Sunday.
Meanwhile, anticipating huge arrival of onions to the market on Monday (September 15), the authorities have declared closure of the yard on Tuesday (September 16) to avoid inconvenience to the farmers.
Officials informed that the onion stock sold at Tadepalligudem market will also be offered the ₹1,200 per quintal price announced by the State government. On the other hand, the officials noticed that commission agents were bringing low quality onions to the auction and warned that action would be taken against such persons. They were also asked not to bring more than 400 bags of onion to the market.
Farmers were advised to bring dry and graded onions to the market along with original certificate of e-cropping, Aadhar card, pass book and bank account book.
