Delhi EV Policy: The Delhi government has approved the Delhi Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0, which comes into effect from July 1, 2026, introducing fresh incentives for electric vehicle buyers while setting a roadmap to phase out the registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers in the national capital.
Under the new policy, electric cars priced up to Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom) and registered in Delhi will receive 100 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees.
To encourage electric two-wheelers, the government has also announced purchase subsidies: Rs 30,000 in the first year, Rs 20,000 in the second year and Rs 10,000 in the third year.
The policy also lays down a phased transition towards electric mobility. From January 1, 2027, only electric autorickshaws will be registered in Delhi. From April 1, 2028, registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers will be discontinued, with only electric two-wheelers eligible for new registration.
Delhi EV Policy 2.0 FAQs: Every Bike Owner’s Questions Answered
- Can I still buy a petrol bike in 2027? Yes. You can still purchase and register a new petrol-powered two-wheeler in Delhi until March 31, 2028.
- What happens if I buy a petrol bike just before the April 1, 2028 deadline? As long as the vehicle is purchased and registered before April 1, 2028, it will remain legally registered under the existing rules.
- Can I continue riding my existing petrol bike after April 1, 2028?Yes. The policy does not ban existing petrol or CNG two-wheelers from being used on Delhi roads. The restriction applies only to the registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers.
- What if I move to Delhi after the new rules come into effect? The policy clearly covers the registration of new vehicles. However, it does not explicitly clarify whether petrol or CNG two-wheelers registered in another state can subsequently be re-registered in Delhi after April 1, 2028.
- Will second-hand petrol bikes still be allowed? The policy does not prohibit the ownership or use of existing petrol two-wheelers. However, detailed rules regarding the sale and transfer of second-hand petrol bikes are yet to be clarified.
- Can I register a petrol bike outside Delhi and ride it in the city?Yes. Vehicles legally registered in other states can continue to be driven in Delhi, subject to existing motor vehicle laws and emission norms. The new policy applies to vehicle registration within Delhi.
- Will I be able to transfer ownership of my petrol bike after April 1, 2028?The policy focuses on the registration of new petrol and CNG two-wheelers. It does not announce any restriction on the transfer of ownership of existing vehicles.
- Will insurance premiums for petrol bikes change? There is no provision in the new EV policy regarding insurance premiums. Insurance rates continue to be determined by insurers and existing regulatory norms.
- Will the resale value of my petrol bike fall?It is too early to predict the impact on resale values. Several factors, including market demand, fuel prices, future regulations and consumer preferences, will determine used-bike prices.
- Should I switch to an electric two-wheeler now?Buyers planning to purchase a new two-wheeler may benefit from switching earlier rather than later. The policy offers purchase subsidies for electric two-wheelers, and EVs will continue to be eligible for registration after the new restrictions on petrol and CNG two-wheelers come into effect. Electric vehicles also contribute to reducing vehicular emissions in the city.
