10-year-old girl drowns in Krishna in Sangli, youth found dead in Kolhapur lake

Two girls entered the Krishna river for a swim and started drowning. Only one of them could be rescued by the local residents

Kolhapur: Two drowning deaths were reported in Sangli and Kolhapur districts on Friday, claiming the lives of a 10-year-old girl and a 20-year-old college student.In Sangli district, Kavita Salunkhe (10), a resident of Udgaon who is originally from Bidar in Karnataka, drowned in the Krishna river at Udgaon on Friday evening.

Her friend Priya Chavan (10) was rescued by local residents.According to the police, the two girls entered the river to swim. The girls soon began struggling in the riverbed. Bapu Chavan, a local resident and Priya’s relative, who too had gone for his routine swim, was at the ghat and spotted the girls. Bapu Chavan and other people rushed to help the girls, but only managed to pull Priya out safely. Kavita had gone missing.

Her body was found later. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.Kavita, who had lost her parents, had been living with her maternal uncle Shankar Chavan at Udgaon. A report was lodged by Kalidas Chavan, Bapu Chavan’s son, at Jaysingpur police station. After a postmortem at the Jaysingpur primary health centre, Kavita’s body was handed over to relatives and the last rites were performed in Bidar district.

In a separate incident in Kolhapur city, the body of Vineet Mohite (20), a resident of Kanannagar in Nagala Park, was found floating in the Rajaram Lake on Friday morning. Residents out for a walk spotted the body and alerted the police. The incident was registered at the CPR police chowkey.A police officer from the CPR police chowkey said, “Vineet was studying in a college. The exact reason for the incident is not clear.”
