Two individuals were arrested in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore in connection with the abduction and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Kannampalayam in Sulur, said the police on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Karthik of Nagapattinam, 33, is a resident of Pallapalayam near Sulur. Another accused, Mohan Raj, was arrested for allegedly assisting him, the Times of India reported.

What Is The Case?

The 10-year-old girl — who had been missing since Thursday evening — was found dead on a lakebed near Kannampalayam on Friday. Police said she had stepped out to buy grocery near her house when accused Karthik allegedly abducted her and later killed her, said the TOI report.

After the incident, the deceased’s parents, relatives, along with public members, staged a protest on Sulur Road, demanding strict action against perpetrators.

Inspector general of police (West Zone) R V Ramya Bharathi visited the protest site and held talks with the protestors, assuring them of a proper investigation into the incident.

Victim’s Kin Seek Justice

A relative of the victim, Senthil Kumar, told ANI that the family is still unaware of how the incident unfolded.

“We don’t know what could have happened; we only received information late yesterday evening. First, they said the girl was missing, but later they said she was found dead on the lake shore. Following that, hundreds of students and the public staged a roadblock protest seeking justice", Kumar said.

“However, the police forcibly pushed them away from the spot, and the parents were taken to the Sulur police station for a compromise. We told them not to sign any papers and not to receive anything. We want justice, and we want to see what judgment will be given to these accused individuals. We are now waiting for the DSP to reach the ESI Hospital", he added, according to ANI.

The deceased’s body has been kept at the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital for an autopsy. A further probe into the matter is underway.

Govt Assures Justice

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and Tamil Nadu minister V. Sampathkumar asserted that strict action would be taken against those responsible and that the government would take necessary steps to curb such incidents.

“The accused will be given stringent punishment. We will take necessary steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future", he told CNN-News18.

Meanwhile, the government has said the family of the deceased would be given adequate compensation.
