12 years on the run, fake DSP caught pulling another con

Vijayapura: A man accused of impersonating a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and cheating job aspirants was arrested in Bengaluru on Monday, nearly 12 years after he allegedly absconded while out on bail.In a press release issued on Tuesday, SP Laxman Nimbargi said APMC police arrested Gyanagouda alias Jnanagouda alias Ganesh alias C Sampathkumar, 31, son of Siddanagouda Patil and a resident of Varagodadinni village in Bagalkot district.According to police, a case was registered against him at APMC police station in 2014 for allegedly posing as a DSP by wearing a khaki uniform and collecting money from unemployed youths on the promise of securing PSI jobs.

Police said he allegedly took Rs 1.2 lakh from Vittal Gyanappa Chayagol after promising a police job for his relative’s son.When the promised job did not materialise and the complainant demanded a refund, the accused and his associates allegedly kidnapped Chayagol on March 26, 2014, and threw him into a canal in Koppal district with the intention of killing him. The accused was arrested during the investigation but later secured bail and allegedly failed to appear before the court for nearly 12 years.

Nimbargi said a similar case was also registered against him at Talikoti police station. In that case, he allegedly posed as a DSP and collected Rs 8 lakh from a complainant after promising a jailer’s job.A special team led by PSI Basavaraj Tippareddy traced and arrested him in Bengaluru. Police said similar cases have reportedly been registered against him at other police stations in the district since 2012.
