13 children injured as school van plunges into Aurangabad canal

Patna: A school van carrying students plunged 15 feet into a canal near Tamsi turn on Amba-Nabinagar main road in Aurangabad district on Wednesday morning, injuring 13 children.

Three of the children are serious.Locals pulled the trapped children out of the van and rushed them to Kutumba Referral Hospital. The driver fled the spot after the accident. Soon police, parents and villagers reached the accident site.Police said three students—R B Pratap (5), Harsh Kumar (12) and Mauli Kumari (7)—were referred to Aurangabad Sadar Hospital due to their serious condition. The accident took place before the children could reach school.Police said the van of a private school in Amba had picked up students from Kutumba, Lakhna, Mahua Dham, and Mirpur villages. However, near Tamsi turn, the driver allegedly lost control and the van moving at 50 km/hr broke through the roadside railing, tumbling into the canal.Locals alleged the van was carrying more children than its capacity. Police, parents, and villagers reached the site.SHO Imran Alam said, “The vehicle has been seized and a search is on for the absconding driver.

The cause of the accident is being investigated.”School management member Rahul Kumar said all children are out of danger and have been sent home after treatment. He said the driver called to inform that the van lost balance because of another vehicle.The injured include Sakshi Kumari (11) of Mirpur, Sakshi Kumari (12) of Kutumba Bazar; Aditya Raj (12); R B Pratap (5) of Sikariya; Ami Kumari (12) of Kutumba; Lucky Raj Sainik (12); Kumar Sugandh Aryan (8) and his sister Srishti Kumari (5) of Mirpur; Harsh Kumar (12); Ayush Kumar (10) and Akshay Kumar (7) of Mahua Dham; Vaibhav Gaurav (6), Mauli Kumari (7) of Mirzapur; Abid Raja (13) and Amit Kumar (7).Locals and parents demanded strict action against the school management and the absconding driver. They also urged regular inspection of private school vehicles and action against those carrying children beyond capacity.
