Fourteen people were killed after a truck carrying 22 workers from Assam fell off a cliff near the China border in Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian Army has launched a search and rescue operation.

Initial reports said the accident occurred Monday but was discovered only on Wednesday night after a survivor managed to reach authorities.

The accident took place in Chaglagam in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district, and the workers travelling in the vehicle were from Assam’s Tinsukia district.

“A major search and rescue operation has been launched by the Indian Army in the higher reaches of Chaglagam, Arunachal Pradesh. The effort was launched after a civilian vehicle carrying 22 workers from Tinsukia fell off a cliff near KM 40,” read a statement by the Army.

“Mutiple rescue columns have been deployed with medical teams and representatives from police, NDRF, SDRF and GREF in coordination with civil authorities. Despite harsh terrain, all efforts are underway to rescue the individuals,” it stated.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that 14 people have died in the accident, and that others remain unaccounted for.
“Deeply pained by the passing away of 14 of our people from Assam in a terrible accident in Arunachal Pradesh.

“Our district administration is in touch with relevant authorities in Arunachal Pradesh and all necessary assistance is being provided. Relief and rescue teams are prioritising locating missing or unaccounted people at the earliest. We are also ensuring that medical help is provided to those in need,” he wrote on X.
