A ninth standard student was killed after she was hit by a autorickshaw when she tried to cross the busy Arakkonam - Kancheepuram Main Road, at Palanipettai village near Arakkonam town in Ranipet.
Police said the deceased was identified as P. Hari Priya (14), a resident of Palanipettai village. She was studying at Government Higher Secondary School in the town. Initial inquiry revealed that Priya was returning home after school hours by foot. As she tried to cross the stretch, an autorickshaw hit her.
In the impact, she was thrown a few metres away from the carriageway. Immediately, other motorists and passersby rescued the badly-injured Priya and admitted her at the Government Taluk Hospital in Arakkonam town.
She was referred to Government Medical College Hospital in Thiruvallur where she succumbed to her injuries. A case was registered by Arakkonam Town police. Police arrested autorickshaw driver Sheikh Abdullah (43), a native of Chittoor (A.P). Later, he was lodged in sub-jail in Arakkonam. A probe is underway.
