15 Saves And A Dream Alive: Curacao Make History Against Ecuador With Heroic Draw

Eloy Room made a record 15 saves as Curacao earned their first-ever World Cup point, frustrating Ecuador in a historic 0-0 draw that kept knockout hopes alive.

Curacao’s World Cup fairytale gained another unforgettable chapter on Saturday, as goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a record-breaking display to help his nation secure its first-ever World Cup point in a dramatic 0-0 draw against Ecuador.

The tiny Caribbean island nation, competing at its maiden World Cup, arrived in Kansas City hoping to restore pride after a crushing 7-1 defeat to Germany. Thanks largely to the brilliance of Room, they did much more than that.

Ecuador dominated throughout, firing 28 shots and forcing 15 saves from the Miami FC goalkeeper. Remarkably, those 15 saves are the most recorded by any goalkeeper in a World Cup match without extra time since records began in 1966.

“History! Our first ever point at the @fifaworldcup," Curacao proudly posted on X after the final whistle.

Room Turns Into a Wall

Ecuador nearly struck inside three minutes when veteran striker Enner Valencia raced through on goal, only for Room to tip the effort around the post.

That set the tone for an extraordinary evening.

Valencia was repeatedly denied, while Gonzalo Plata, Jordy Alcivar and several others also found the Curacao goalkeeper impossible to beat. Ecuador enjoyed 65 percent possession in the first half and spent much of the match camped in Curacao territory, but they simply could not find a way through.

Curacao occasionally threatened on the counterattack, with Sherel Floranus blazing over early on, but the story was all about Room.

As Ecuador’s frustration grew, the goalkeeper’s confidence only increased. He made save after save, preserving a result that few expected before kickoff.

Royal Support and Historic Dreams

Curacao, the smallest nation by population ever to compete at a World Cup, had some notable support in the stands. Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were present, with the island remaining an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Managed by veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat, Curacao’s squad is largely made up of players born in the Netherlands, but their achievement belongs entirely to them.

Ecuador Left Searching

Ecuador remain without a goal after two World Cup matches.

“There are things you cannot explain in football," said Ecuador coach Sebastián Beccacece.

“We wanted to win, we didn’t do it. I am the one who is responsible. If I see that you are giving it all competing, I have no complaints."

Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast earlier in the day secured top spot in Group E. Ecuador will now face Germany in their final match, while Curacao’s knockout dream remains alive heading into a decisive clash with Ivory Coast.
