At least 150 couples in Indore have called off their weddings over the past 40 days, with nearly two-thirds citing social media activity as the primary reason, according to a Dainik Bhaskar report dated November 10, highlighting the growing role of digital behaviour in straining personal relationships.
A wedding is often seen as a major life milestone, with proposals and engagement celebrations painting a picture of perfection. But at times, plans can unravel suddenly, taking an unexpected turn that disrupts even the most anticipated ceremonies.
As per the report, old social media posts about former relationships were a major reason behind the cancellation of 150 weddings in just 40 days in Indore.
A similar episode grabbed headlines when Indian women’s cricket team vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and Indore-based music composer Palash Muchhal called off their much-anticipated wedding just before the ceremony.
However, such last-minute cancellations are no longer rare, and the high-profile case appears to reflect a broader, growing trend.
The findings show that a striking 62 per cent of wedding cancellations were linked to social media, while the rest stemmed from factors such as a death or accident in the family, mutual disputes, or other unforeseen circumstances.
The report cited multiple cases in which one partner unearthed old social media posts, often tied to a past relationship, triggering conflicts that ultimately led to the wedding being called off.
One couple from Indore and Gujarat called off their wedding after an argument broke out during the pre-wedding shoot over the bride’s old posts. In another case, a bride disappeared right after the sangeet at a wedding that had a decor budget of nearly 1 crore; it was later found that she was in a relationship with someone else.
Similarly, at venues such as Vitthal Rukmani Garden, three weddings were called off in a single month due to illness, family disputes and sudden deaths.
The last-minute cancellations led to heavy financial losses for vendors, with wedding planners and hotel operators saying they had little scope to recover their costs.
Hotel Association President Sumit Suri said the cancelled weddings resulted in losses of around Rs 25 crore for the wedding industry. The abrupt pullouts triggered a ripple effect across the sector, hitting planners, hotels, caterers, bands, decorators and other service providers who had already taken advance bookings and made extensive preparations.
