Chikkamagaluru: The district administration has identified 163 landslide-prone spots across the district amid active southwest monsoon conditions. While precautionary measures have been initiated in some locations, work remains pending in several other areas. The vulnerable spots are spread across the Malnad taluks of Chikkamagaluru, Mudigere, Sringeri, Koppa, and NR Pura, where heavy rainfall and terrain increase the risk of landslides every year. Apart from natural causes, unscientific works during road construction and expansion are likely to trigger problems in many areas, particularly in Sringeri taluk, locals complained. The administration said it is prepared to handle any situation.

“Teams have been asked to monitor all vulnerable stretches. In some places, drains have been cleared and retaining walls strengthened. But in many estate roads and interior areas, work is still ongoing,” a senior district-level official said. With the monsoon active over Malnad, residents in landslide-prone villages remain on edge. In recent years, landslides have damaged homes, plantations and key roads connecting Mangaluru and Shivamogga.

A few days ago, a boulder slipped on Charmadi Ghat, raising fears of road closure, but authorities cleared it.The district disaster management authority has kept earthmovers and rescue teams on standby. Gram panchayats have been asked to report any signs of land subsidence or cracks in slopes immediately. In 2022 and 2023, Chikkamagaluru reported more than 40 minor and major landslide incidents, cutting off villages in Mudigere and Sringeri for days at a time.

Coffee and areca planters have repeatedly demanded permanent mitigation measures.Residents living on steep slopes and near streams have been advised to stay alert and shift to safer locations if heavy rain persists.Deputy commissioner Balwant Singh Meena said necessary arrangements have been made to ensure public safety. Authorities and local bodies have been instructed to remain prepared. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team will be stationed in Balehonnour, he said.
