A 17-year-old boy was brutally murdered by a group of five people near the Meenakshi Amman temple in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai, prompting strong condemnation of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government.
According to local media reports, the victim was allegedly killed following a clash that took place during a recent Chithirai festival. The boy was reportedly attacked by a group of five while he was asleep in the car parking area of the temple. His body was thrown from the first floor after he was killed.
The young victim was identified as Kubendran. Police said the murder is believed to have stemmed from an old enmity that prompted the clash. Police are on lookout for the five suspects involved in the murder.
BJP Slams TVK Govt
Several BJP leaders hit out at the C Joseph Vijay-led government for the flailing law and order situation of the state.
“Drug peddlers, Sexual assaulters, and murderers have a free pass in Tamil Nadu. The State police seem to have learnt no lessons from the past, & the new TVK govt is yet to emerge from its celebratory mode and confront the grim realities unfolding on the ground," said senior BJP leader K Annamalai.
Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran condemned the incident, saying those involved in the crime must be severely punished.
“How many more lives must be sacrificed for Mr Joseph Vijay, who has assumed the role of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, to learn the fundamentals of administration? During the elections, Mr Joseph Vijay sharply criticised the breakdown of law and order under the DMK regime—shouldn’t he have first set it right himself immediately upon taking office?" he said.

DMK MP Kanimozhi also described the incident as “heartbreaking", saying Tamil Nadu has become a state where children, women, differently-abled people, and the elderly have no protection. “It is doubtful whether this new government is even aware that law and order has severely deteriorated," she said.
Notably, this incident took place after Tamil Nadu was rocked by the abduction and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Kannampalayam in Sulur. Police said the girl had stepped out to buy groceries near her house when the accused allegedly kidnapped and murdered her.
CM Vijay To Hold Meeting With Police Officials
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is expected to hold consultations with police officials on Monday in view of the increase in crimes against children. The meeting will largely focus on the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu.
After the shocking murder of the 10-year-old girl, Vijay described the act as “inhuman and unforgivable" and assured that all necessary actions would be taken against those responsible.
“The Tamil Nadu government will firmly act to ensure that those who engage in such heinous acts against women and children receive severe punishment under the law. All immediate and necessary actions for this will be taken", he added.
