A 17-year-old girl who fled her home in Andhra Pradesh to escape alleged sexual abuse by her stepfather was reportedly drugged and raped in Odisha’s Berhampur city, prompting the arrest of two men and detention of a minor, police said on Tuesday.

According to Odisha Police, the incident took place on March 29, days after the girl arrived in Berhampur from Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. She had travelled alone on the Prashanti Express and got down at Berhampur railway station on March 24, seeking to get away from her stepfather, who she told police had been sexually abusing her.

After reaching Berhampur, the teenager spent some time on the station platform before finding work at a nearby tea stall. It was there that she befriended a local boy, who later took her to meet his friends on March 29, PTI reported.

As per the preliminary investigation, the girl was offered a drink laced with sedatives, causing her to lose consciousness. Two adult men, aged 23 and 19, then allegedly raped her, while a 15-year-old boy assisted them, police said. Local residents later found the girl and alerted the police, leading to her rescue.

Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M told PTI that three persons were taken to custody, of whom two adults of 23 years and 19 years were arrested, while a 15-year-old boy was sent to a juvenile home.

Police have registered a gang rape case under various sections of the law, including provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A separate case has also been filed in Andhra Pradesh against the girl’s stepfather over the alleged sexual abuse that forced her to run away from home.

During the investigation, police found out that the girl, a native of Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh, had fled her home and reached Berhampur railway station aboard Prashanti Express on March 24 to escape sexual abuse by her stepfather.

The survivor was produced before the District Child Welfare Committee, and a medical examination was conducted. She has since been lodged in a child care home as per the committee’s directions, police said.
