A 19-year-old NEET aspirant died after allegedly falling from the upper floor of a residential building in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore late on Thursday night. According to her family, she had been experiencing severe stress after three attempts to clear the medical entrance examination.
After the incident, Avantika Maurya was rushed to a private facility, and later she was referred to MY Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, according to the Indian Express.
This is yet another case of an alleged suicide ahead of the retest of NEET –– scheduled to be held on June 21 –– following the cancellation of the original May 3 exam due to irregularities and allegations of paper leaks.
Maurya’s family members believe that the uncertainty and stress due to the upcoming exam had significantly affected her mental health, causing her to take the extreme step.
“Avantika was under stress after the NEET examination controversy. She had failed to clear the exam three times and was not behaving normally on Thursday. She barely spoke and answered most questions only in yes or no," said her elder sister, Dr Sapna Maurya, according to the Indian Express.
How Incident Unfolded
Avantika Maurya, daughter of a government doctor, had been residing with her sister while preparing for NEET. On Thursday night, around 11:30 P.M., she was speaking on the phone with a relative while she ascended a staircase towards the terrace.
Moments later, she allegedly fell from the upper flour of the building. After a loud bang was heard, residents rushed out and discovered Maurya’s body lying on the ground.
Police are trying to assess whether the incident was linked to exam stress or other circumstances. They said further action would be initiated after a concrete investigation and statements from the deceased’s family members, Indian Express reported.
The incident has once again brought to light the emotional toll of the highly competitive exam –– especially at a time when the transparency of the exam remains under scrutiny after paper leak allegations and the subsequent cancellation of May 3 test.
