Panaji: With new skill-based subjects now added to the curriculum in classes where the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has been implemented in Goa, state govt has trained and deployed additional teachers on a contract basis to cover these new topics.

As per official data, 475 such teachers have been trained and deployed at the preprimary and primary school level in Goa.Another 240 art teachers have been appointed on a contract basis, besides 382 national skills qualification framework teachers for secondary schools. From the new academic year 2026-27, state govt has decided to implement NEP recommendations in all classes of the state board-affiliated schools.Until 2025-26, NEP was implemented at the nursery level, in Class III, Class VI, and in Classes IX and X. From the new session, it is also being implemented in Classes I-II, Classes IV-V, and Classes VII-VIII, the circular issued by the Goa State Educational Research and Training (SCERT) states.Students of Classes I and II, apart from the regular subjects, will also now study art and craft, sports, yoga, reading and gardening activities as subjects.

A common syllabus for art and craft, sports, and yoga will be provided by the SCERT. Schools had been assured additional teachers to teach these new subjects. In Class I and II, there will be an added seventh period now where “activities aimed at fostering and enhancing students’ skills will be conducted during the AEP (additional enrichment period)”.For other classes too, as part of NEP implementation in these classes, four new school assessment subjects have been added, which are physical education, art, vocational, and multidisciplinary subjects.Similarly, the idea behind national skills qualification framework subjects for secondary school students is to teach them a skill before completing school, which can then give them an edge in the employment market.
