Mohali: Mohali police arrested two suspected drug smugglers and seized 400 grams of heroin from their possession during a naka on the road connecting Sector 104 and Sukhgarh village under the Sohana police station.The accused, both residents of Chandigarh, were travelling in a Hyundai i10 car that was intercepted after the driver allegedly attempted to flee on spotting the police checkpoint.A case has been registered under Sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act, and further investigations are under way to trace the source and intended destination of the contraband.Police said the naka was set up around 1.20 pm by a team led by SI Barma Singh, in-charge of the Saneta police post.
During checking, a white Hyundai i10 approaching from the Sukhgarh side allegedly aroused suspicion when its driver tried to turn back on seeing the police party.The vehicle was stopped and its occupants identified as Ajay Kumar and Varun alias Sonu, both residents of Sector 49-C, Chandigarh.Police said the duo were informed of their legal rights before the search. During the operation, 200 grams of heroin was allegedly recovered from Ajay Kumar and another 200 grams from Varun, taking the total recovery to 400 grams.
The seized contraband was sealed as per procedure and the car was also impounded.Investigators are now probing the source of the heroin, its intended recipients and possible links of the accused to a larger drug trafficking network operating in the region.
