2 districts on orange alert, 8 on yellow today

Kochi: India meteorological department (IMD) issued an orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday for Kannur and Kasaragod. Respective district administrations have suspended classes in educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Wednesday.

However, no changes have been announced for examinations and interviews scheduled for the day.No alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta on Wednesday. The remaining districts are on yellow alert for Wednesday. Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod will be on yellow warning on Thursday.It warned that squally weather with wind speed 40-50kmph gusting to 60kmph is likely to prevail along and off Kerala coast till Thursday.The rainfall is under the influence of a trough (low depression) running from south-central Madhya Pradesh to east-central Arabian Sea across Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa between 4.5km and 5.8km above mean sea level.Meanwhile, Kerala recorded 34% deficiency in June rainfall this year. The state received only 62cm rainfall against normal of 64. 8cm in June. Wayanad tops in state with highest deficiency of 68%. Only Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram received normal rainfall. The remaining districts witnessed deficient rainfall in June.
