Senior Congress leader VD Satheesan on Sunday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s immediate intervention after reports emerged of deaths of two people from Kerala and disappearance of another in flash floods in Oman.

In his letter to PM Modi, Satheesan expressed concerns over the incident that took place on Saturday, claiming four lives including two Indians – Yusuf and Shamla, originally from Trithala in Kerala. The woman who went missing was identified as Ramla, also from Trithala.

The incident took place in South Al Batinah Governorate after three vehicles were caught in fast-moving floodwaters in Wadi Al Maawil.

“I write to you with deep concern regarding the tragic flash floods that struck Oman on Saturday, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving one woman from Kerala still missing," he said.

PTI quoted reports stating that the victims were travelling in a vehicle when it was caught in a sudden flash flood in Oman’s Al Batinah Governorate.

The Congress leader urged the Centre to take immediate steps to coordinate with Oman authorities o expedite and strengthen the ongoing search and rescue operations, especially amid the continuing heavy rains and flood risk in the region.

Satheesan also requested the Centre to give all possible assistance to ensure the safety of those affected and to support the families of the victims.

According to Gulf News, the rescue teams on Saturday night confirmed that three people had died and more than 40 others were rescued.

The country’s meteorological department has forecast thunderstorms will continue on Sunday, accompanied by hail and strong downdraft winds across North A’Sharqiyah, South A’Sharqiyah, Al Wusta, A’Dakhiliyah, A’Dhahirah, South Al Batinah, and Muscat.

The National Committee for Emergency Management has activated the National Center for Emergency Management and relevant sectors in A’Dhahirah, A’Dakhiliyah, North A’Sharqiyah, South A’Sharqiyah, and Al Wusta to manage impacts from the weather system Low Pressure Al-Musarrat. Authorities remain on high alert to address potential flooding and other hazards, Gulf News reported.
