Agra: Two men wanted for carjacking and robbing an app-based cab driver from Delhi on June 27 were arrested after a police encounter in Mant area of Mathura late on Tuesday night. One of the suspects was shot in the leg during the exchange of fire.Acting on a tip-off, Mathura police intercepted the suspects on the Yamuna Expressway service road near the Radharani Temple underpass. Cornered, the accused opened fire on the police team, compelling the cops to return fire, during which accused Karan Singh (24) sustained a bullet injury to his left leg. He and his accomplice Avnesh Kumar (29) was arrested. An injured Karan was later shifted to district hospital for treatment.The stolen vehicle, two illegal .315 bore country-made pistols, five live cartridges and three spent cartridges were seized from the two accused.According to Mant SHO Jasbir Singh, three men—Karan, Avnesh and Arun Kumar—booked a Maruti Ertiga cab via the Uber app. During the ride, the passengers strangled the driver-cum-owner, Pawan Kumar, with a towel, hit him on the head with pliers and threatened him with a firearm.
They then threw the driver out of the vehicle near Devaraha Baba Ashram in Vrindavan after robbing his phone and fled with the vehicle.Based on a complaint by Pawan Kumar, a resident of Palam village of Delhi, a case was registered under BNS Section 309(6) (robbery) against three accused, said SHO Singh, adding a hunt is on to nab the third accused.DSP Sanjeev Kumar Rai said, apart from the robbery charges, a separate case for attempt to murder and violations of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused for attacking the police.
