Residents in Gujarat’s Surat were left shocked after the bodies of two young women were discovered inside a washroom at a temple complex, with police saying anaesthesia injections were recovered from the site. Investigators also found that the pair had searched online for ways to die, including queries on ChatGPT about how suicide could be carried out.
The deceased were identified as 18-year-old Roshni Sharad Shirsath and 20-year-old Jyotsna Atul Chaudhary, childhood friends and college students.
Their bodies were found at the Atmiya Sanskar Dham Swaminarayan Temple in the Dindoli area.
According to police, both women had left their homes around 7 am on March 6, telling family members they were going to college, but they never returned.
Concerned relatives later traced their scooter parked near the temple and began searching the premises.
A washroom door inside the temple compound was found locked from the inside.
When family members forced the door open, the two women were discovered unconscious and were rushed to hospitals, where doctors declared them dead.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Nirav Singh Gohil said two accidental death cases had been registered at the Dindoli Police Station and investigations were ongoing.
“In the washroom of the Swaminarayan temple, two young women, aged 18 and 20, were found unconscious. Their parents and relatives took them to hospitals, where the medical officers declared them dead,” he said.
During the initial investigation, officers recovered syringes, bottles believed to contain anaesthetic drugs and packets suspected to contain poison from the washroom.
Police said the preliminary findings suggest the women may have injected anaesthetic substances, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after post-mortem reports.
The officer added that both women knew each other for years and had studied together since primary school.
One was a first-year B.Com student at Citizen College in Udhna, while the other was pursuing second-year B.Com at Wadia Women’s College.
Police have seized the mobile phones of both women and sent them for forensic analysis.
“When the phones were checked, it was found that they had searched on ChatGPT about how suicide can be done and which drugs are used,” Gohil said.
CCTV cameras installed outside the temple washroom showed the two women entering together around 7:30 am and not coming out afterward.
Authorities said the investigation remains at an early stage, and further findings will depend on forensic and post-mortem reports.
Police are continuing to examine digital evidence and question family members as they try to determine the circumstances leading to the deaths.
