Apple has released its annual list of the most downloaded apps and games for 2025. This year’s list reveals a significant shift in US consumer habits as AI applications gain massive popularity under the free apps category.

For the US market, OpenAI’s ChatGPT topped the rankings for free iPhone apps (excluding games), securing the most installs in 2025.Notably, ChatGPT climbed to top spot after ranking on No. 4 last year and not making the top-10 list in 2023. Notably, ChatGPT became the most-downloaded app globally in March this year, outpacing others like TikTok and Instagram. Google Gemini also made it to the list, with other top apps including Google Search app that allows users to “Search with Al, Images & Text”. Social media apps also ranked higher in the list with Threads, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and Snapchat making the top 20 cut. Moreover, WhatsApp and Telegram appeared to be the most popular apps for communication. Other utility apps include Google Maps, CapCut, Spotify, Chrome and Rednote.
