In another mass incident, 200 more stray dogs were allegedly killed in Telangana’s Hanamkonda district. Activists have claimed that more than 1,100 canines have been slain across the state since December 2025.
The scale of the alleged slaughter has sparked outrage among animal welfare organisations, which alleged that local authorities are using lethal means to resolve a perceived public menace.
The latest incident took place in Hanamkonda district’s Pathipaka village. According to a complaint lodged by A Goutham, the cruelty prevention manager for the Stray Animal Foundation of India, these animals were killed roughly a month ago through the administration of poisonous injections. The complainant alleged that the mass killing was carried out on the specific orders of the gram panchayat secretary.
Investigations into these widespread incidents suggest that the killings are suspected to have been orchestrated by various elected representatives, including village sarpanches, to fulfil campaign promises made to residents ahead of the gram panchayat elections held in December 2025. These officials reportedly pledged to address the “stray dog menace" as a priority for their constituents.
To avoid public scrutiny, those involved have frequently sought to hide the evidence of their actions. In the Pathipaka case, Goutham stated that dog carcasses were found buried in a graveyard after the poisoning.
Similar discoveries have been made elsewhere; for instance, approximately 300 canines were allegedly poisoned in Pegadapally village of Jagtial district on January 22. Animal welfare organisations have filed multiple police complaints, leading to a series of criminal cases against village leaders and administrative staff.
At the Shayampet police station, officials have integrated recent complaints into an existing FIR concerning the killing of 300 dogs in Shayampet and Arepally villages, where nine persons, including two women sarpanches and their husbands, have already been booked. Legal action is currently being pursued under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
In Yacharam village, a case was registered against the sarpanch, secretary, and a ward member following the poisoning of 100 dogs. In Kamareddy district, six individuals, including five village sarpanches, have been booked for their alleged involvement in the killing of around 200 stray dogs.
Police have confirmed that further investigations are ongoing as they look into the widespread and organised nature of these brutal incidents across the state.
