A special NIA court in Mumbai on Thursday (July 31, 2025) acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit, in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.
A total of 14 persons were arrested in connection with the case, but only seven faced trial. The remaining seven were discharged at the time of framing of charges. Those who went on trial were: Pragya Singh Thakur, Prasad Shrikant Purohit, Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Dwivedi, and Sudhakar Chaturvedi.
On September 29, 2008, an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle detonated near a mosque in Malegaon, a town about 200 km from Mumbai. The blast killed six people and injured 101 others.
