In recent years, the management of urban utilities in a rapidly expanding metropolis like Bengaluru has required a delicate balance between infrastructure upgrades and consumer convenience. As the city prepares for the upcoming summer months, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has scheduled critical maintenance work to enhance the efficiency of its distribution network.
While these technical interventions are designed to improve long-term reliability, they necessitate temporary pauses in service that impact the daily routines of thousands of residents across the city’s eastern and southern corridors.
The BWSSB has announced a significant 24-hour disruption in Cauvery water supply starting at 6:00 AM on Thursday, February 26, and concluding at 6:00 AM on Friday, February 27. The shutdown is required to facilitate the installation of Electromagnetic Flow (EMF) meters near the Gottigere balancing reservoir as part of the Cauvery Stage 5 project.
These advanced meters are vital for tracking water flow with precision, helping the board identify leakages and ensure equitable distribution across the growing city.
Affected Neighborhoods and Zones
The maintenance work will primarily impact residential and commercial pockets in the East and South zones. Residents in the following areas should prepare for a complete halt in supply:
- East Bengaluru: Whitefield, Nellurahalli, Siddapura, Nagonadanahalli, Ramagondanahalli, Channasandra, Hoodi, Garudachar Palya, Doddanekkundi, Munekolalu, and Kadugodi.
- South Bengaluru: Kumaraswamy Layout, Poorna Prajna Layout, Banashankari, Kollahalli, Anjanapura, Gottigere, Begur, Kodichikkanahalli, and Kudlu.
Rising Concerns Among Residents
The announcement has sparked anxiety among citizens who are already wary of the city’s historical water challenges. With the temperatures beginning to rise, even a 24-hour lapse can disrupt household management significantly.
“Owning a home here was a dream, but the constant worry about water is becoming a reality we deal with every February," says Arathi Rao, a resident of Whitefield. “Even with a storage tank, a full day’s shutdown makes us very nervous. If the supply doesn’t return on time Friday morning, we will have to rely on expensive private tankers, which are already hard to book."
BWSSB Advisory and Preparation
To mitigate the impact, the BWSSB has urged residents to store sufficient water in advance. Officials emphasize that the stored water should be used judiciously for essential purposes like drinking and cooking, while non-essential activities such as gardening or vehicle washing should be postponed.
While pumping is scheduled to resume at 6:00 AM on Friday, the board has clarified that it may take several additional hours for water pressure to normalize in the pipes, especially for those living at the tail-end of the distribution lines. This proactive upgrade, though inconvenient, is viewed by the board as a necessary step to stabilize the network before the peak of the dry season arrives.
