Police on Thursday arrested a 25-year-old man for killing a security guard and injuring another after an alleged argument at a casino in a luxury hotel in Goa’s Panaji. Police said the exact reason for the assault is yet to be ascertained.

The Panaji police station received a distress call around 3:10 am regarding the incident at Casino Carnival, Campal. Police said after an alleged altercation, a guest at the casino allegedly assaulted multiple security personnel using a wooden rod, which had an iron clamp at its base, taken from a staircase.

The accused, identified as Abdul Altaf (25), was apprehended while he was on his way to the Dabolim Airport in an “attempt to evade arrest,” said SP North Goa Rahul Gupta.

Police said Dheeru Sharma (33), who hailed from Satna in Madhya Pradesh, succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to Goa Medical College for treatment. Another security guard, identified as Satyam Gaonkar (27), a resident of Shiroda in Goa, sustained a head injury.

In a statement, Goa police said a team was constituted under the supervision of Gupta, SDPO Panaji Sudesh Naik and a Panaji police inspector to investigate the matter.
