3 more arrested for lynching Bengal man after 11-year-old's rape-murder

Three more people were arrested on Saturday for their alleged role in the lynching of a man in West Bengal after the body of an 11-year-old girl, who was raped and killed, was recovered from a pond stuffed inside a sack, police said.

With the latest arrests, the total number of people held in the lynching case has risen to five. The mob had lynched Indrajit Mondal after suspecting him of involvement in the girl’s rape and murder. Later, Suvendu Adhikari said Mondal was innocent and that those involved in the lynching would be charged with murder.

The girl had gone missing on July 4 after leaving her home in Baruipur in South 24 Parganas to buy a birthday gift for a friend. Her family then lodged a missing complaint with the police. Her body was recovered the following day.

A senior police officer said, "A thorough investigation is underway. We have already arrested five accused in the lynching case. No one will be spared."

Adhikari had visited Baruipur soon after the girl’s rape and murder and met her family at the district police headquarters. He had also met Mondal’s family and held a meeting with senior police officers before announcing that he would return within a week.

He is scheduled to meet the family of the rape-murder victim before visiting Mondal’s house on Saturday. He is also scheduled to inaugurate a police outpost at Surjapur in the Baruipur Police District area.

Ahead of his visit, the local administration repaired dilapidated roads. Mondal’s house, which was vandalised by the mob after the lynching, was also repaired, while officials have been extending assistance to his elderly parents.

The case centres on the rape and murder of the 11-year-old girl, the recovery of her body, and the lynching that followed, in which five people have so far been arrested.
