Victims were waiting for transport near a roadside eatery
Meerut: Three women died while two others, including a minor boy, were injured after a speeding car ran over them on national highway-334 under Hafizpur police station of Hapur district.
The victims were waiting for transport near a roadside eatery.The incident took place around 5pm on Thursday evening when the car, coming from the Hapur side, allegedly went out of control and hit them. Sitara Devi (60) and Saroj Sharma (55), both residents of Brajnathpur in Hapur, died on the spot. Sharda Devi (60), who had come to drop her daughter Ruby and her two children at their in-laws’ house in Naraina village, succumbed to injuries during treatment.Ruby (32) and her two children, Lavish (6) and Khushi (9), sustained serious injuries. “The bodies were sent for post-mortem while the injured were admitted to hospital. Lavish is in a critical state. Ruby and Khushi were discharged from hospital after treatment,” said additional SP Vineet Kumar.Police said the accused driver, Naresh Kumar (54 is a native of Meerut and has been arrested. Based on a complaint, an FIR was lodged against Naresh Kumar under BNS sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 281 (rash driving or driving on public way), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others).
“The car rammed into the divider after hitting the women and was caught by local residents. Naresh Kumar’s wife and daughter were also in the car when the accident took place. Kumar is an ex-serviceman and currently works in the Indian railways. He was produced before a court and sent to jail on Friday,” said station house officer Praveen Kumar.The bodies were handed over to the families on Friday morning.
