Haridwar: Four men from Punjab’s Gurdaspur district were arrested for allegedly possessing and circulating counterfeit Indian currency during a late-night checking drive by Haridwar police near the Mela Hospital.Police said the accused attempted to flee after they were stopped but were quickly nabbed. A search led to the seizure of 169 fake Rs 500 notes with a face value of Rs 84,500.During interrogation, the accused allegedly told police they had bought 200 counterfeit Rs 500 notes worth Rs 1 lakh from a supplier in Punjab for Rs 20,000. Investigators said the group had come to Haridwar to pass the fake notes as genuine and had already used some of them for purchases in local markets.A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway. Police have also shared details of the case with central agencies to trace the wider network.City police station SHO KS Rana said the accused were identified as Sarjeet Singh (58), his son Tinku Singh (29), Sanjeev Kumar (42), and his son Sumit Kumar (20).Rana said, “The gang had targeted religious and tourist destinations, where fake currency could be circulated easily.”
