A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia on Wednesday triggered a tsunami in the coastal areas of Kuril Islands and Japan’s large northern island of Hokkaido. Warnings have also been issued for California, Alaska, and Hawaii in the US, and other coasts towards New Zealand, AP reported.

Japan Meteorological Agency reported that a tsunami as high as 50 centimeters struck Ishinomaki port, marking the highest wave recorded so far. 16 other locations along the Pacific coast reported waves of up to 40 centimeters as they moved south along the Pacific coast, from Hokkaido to areas just northeast of Tokyo.

Officials urged people to stay alert as bigger waves could be on their way.

In the ongoing chaos, four massive whales were washed up along the coast of Japan, hours after the earthquake. Visuals of them lying along the shore surfaced in the media. BNO News shared the video of whales along the shore while the waves came back and forth.
