For many people, a ₹7 lakh monthly salary sounds like the dream. Bigger paycheque, better lifestyle, more savings. Right?Well, not so fast.A Dutch-Indian couple has gone viral after sharing a simple comparison that challenges the idea that earning more abroad automatically means living better.
Their video compares what life looks like on a monthly salary of ₹40,000 in India versus around ₹7 lakh in Switzerland, and the numbers have surprised plenty of people online. The couple, Chantal and Guru, kept the comparison focused on one thing: everyday expenses."₹7 lakh salary sounds amazing… until you see the rent," they wrote alongside the video before asking viewers a question that quickly sparked debate: "Which side are you picking? India or Switzerland?"In the clip, Chantal explains the costs associated with living in India, while Guru breaks down the Swiss side of the equation.
The biggest eye-opener? Housing.According to their comparison, someone paying around ₹20,000 a month in rent in India could end up spending close to ₹2 lakh for accommodation in Switzerland.
And the expenses don't stop there. The couple also compares grocery bills, health insurance, public transport and childcare. One example that caught people's attention was childcare, which they estimate at roughly ₹5,000 a month in India compared with around ₹1.5 lakh in Switzerland.
The point of the video wasn't that one country is better than the other. Instead, it highlighted something that's easy to overlook when people compare salaries across countries: the cost of living.A bigger salary often comes with much bigger monthly bills. As expected, the internet had plenty to say.One user simply called the comparison "really nice."Others felt that money alone doesn't tell the whole story. One commenter asked, "How about road conditions, air quality, corruption, civic sense, law and order, women and child safety?"The couple acknowledged the point and replied, "Good point.
We were just comparing finances here, but we can make these in the future too."That response seemed to resonate with many viewers, who agreed that salaries are only one part of deciding where to live. Quality of life, career opportunities, healthcare, family support and personal priorities all play a role.Chantal and Guru regularly post videos about life between two cultures. Through their Instagram and YouTube channels, the Dutch-Indian couple shares everything from travel experiences and food to cultural differences and everyday life.
As their YouTube bio puts it, they are "A Dutch–Indian duo sharing culture, food, travel and everyday cross-cultural life."Their latest video may not settle the debate over whether life is better in India or Switzerland. But it has reminded people that when it comes to salaries, the figure on the pay slip is only half the story. What really matters is how much of it is left once the bills are paid.
