A 40-year-old woman was gangraped during a robbery in Madhya Pradesh's Alirajpur and critically injured after a wooden object was allegedly inserted into her private parts.

A 40-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped after a group of robbers broke into her house in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district, leaving her critically injured after a wooden object was allegedly inserted into her private parts, police said on Saturday.

The widow, who was with her younger daughter at the time of the incident, has been referred to a hospital in Indore for treatment after sustaining serious injuries during the assault.

According to Alirajpur Superintendent of Police Raghuvansh Kumar Singh, the incident took place on Friday night in a village under the jurisdiction of the Bori police station.

Preliminary investigation suggests that five to six men entered the woman’s house, where she was alone.

Police said two of the intruders allegedly raped the woman after entering the house.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that a wooden object was inserted into her private parts," SP Raghuvansh Kumar Singh told PTI.

The police official said doctors have confirmed injuries to the woman’s private parts.

The victim’s condition remains serious as she remains under treatment.

According to the police, the accused fled after stealing silver ornaments and a mobile phone from the woman’s house.

“Prima facie, it appears that the individuals entered the house with the intention of committing robbery, though all angles are being investigated," Singh said.

Investigators have recovered evidence from the crime scene but have not disclosed details as the investigation is still underway.

Police have launched a search operation to trace the accused involved in the incident.

Authorities said all aspects of the case are being examined to establish the sequence of events and identify everyone responsible for the alleged crime.
