5 airlines shift operations to Guwahati’s state-of-the-art T2

Guwahati: The newly inaugurated Terminal 2 (T2) at Guwahati Airport, opened by PM Narendra Modi, has expanded and strengthened the airport’s domestic network, with five domestic airlines shifting operations to the new facility, officials said on Saturday.

They added that IndiGo and international services will move to the state-of-the-art terminal in phases next. The new terminal, equipped with technology-enabled infrastructure and an Assam-inspired design, is aimed at improving efficiency and passenger experience while increasing the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 13.1 million. Domestic operations at T2 of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport (LGBIA) began on Feb 22 after Modi inaugurated the T2 of the Guwahati airport in Dec last year.

“SpiceJet, Alliance Air, Air India Express, Air India and Akasa Air have transitioned to T2. IndiGo and international flights continue to operate from the existing Terminal 1 and will shift in a phased manner,” stated an official release by the airport management on Saturday.“The commissioning of T2 enhances the airport’s annual handling capacity to 13.1 million passengers, reinforcing Guwahati’s role as the primary aviation gateway to the northeast.

The expansion aligns with rising traffic demand and is expected to improve regional connectivity while supporting tourism and economic growth,” it added. The T2 includes technology-enabled passenger processing systems such as DigiYatra-enabled e-gates, self-bag drop counters, full-body scanners and an automated baggage handling system. An official said that facilities including check-in at the parking area and the arrival forecourt are also intended to ease passenger movement. The terminal’s design draws from Assam’s natural and cultural heritage, with abundantly grown bamboo-inspired interiors, orchid-themed columns and traditional Assamese Japi motifs, based on the state’s iconic conical bamboo hat that represents heritage and hospitality. A distinctive ‘Sky Forest’ arrival experience, featuring more than one lakh native plants, further adds to the passenger experience.
