Thousands of rural women across eastern Uttar Pradesh are driving a digital transformation in the dairy sector, managing everything from milk collection and quality testing to payments and record-keeping through a mobile application.

According to the Uttar Pradesh government, around 50,000 women from Varanasi, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Ghazipur, Sonbhadra, Ballia and Bhadohi are now operating dairy businesses digitally under the Kashi Milk Producers Institution network.

The initiative, launched under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has helped eliminate intermediaries, improve transparency and boost the incomes of rural women.

2 Lakh Litres Of Milk Processed Daily

Women associated with the digital dairy network collectively handle the procurement and sale of more than two lakh litres of milk every day.

At village-level milk collection centres, digital machines are used to measure milk quantity and test fat content, while all transaction details are uploaded to the Kashi e-Dairy mobile application.

The digital system allows livestock rearers to access real-time information regarding milk sales, quality parameters, payments and daily business transactions.

Direct Payments, No Middlemen

Officials said one of the key features of the initiative is the direct transfer of payments to livestock rearers through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

Payments are credited to bank accounts every 10 days, removing the role of intermediaries and ensuring greater transparency in the dairy business.

Information related to fat testing, milk procurement and payment status is available online, helping farmers and dairy producers track transactions more efficiently.

12,000 Women Become ‘Lakhpati Didi’

The government said the programme has had a significant impact on the economic condition of rural women.

Approximately 12,000 women associated with the dairy network have achieved the status of “Lakhpati Didi" by earning more than ₹1 lakh annually through dairy-related activities.

Officials said the initiative has increased women’s participation in business and technology-driven enterprises, enabling them to move beyond traditional livestock-rearing roles.

Model For Rural Empowerment

The digital dairy model is being projected as an example of women’s empowerment, digital literacy and rural economic development.

Milk collection centres have been integrated with mobile applications and digital equipment, ensuring that information related to milk quantity, quality, payments and daily operations is recorded online.

Officials believe the initiative has not only modernised dairy operations in Purvanchal but also created new employment and income opportunities in villages while strengthening the rural economy.
