55-Yr-Old Dies In Hit & Run In Northwest Delhi, Driver Held

New Delhi: It was a usual morning when 55-year-old Deepak, a resident of northwest Delhi’s Mangolpuri, left for Modinagar in Uttar Pradesh for work at 5.30am Sunday. He loaded tiles onto his scooty for multiple delivery rounds to “earn as much as he could for the family,” his wife Geeta told TOI. Little did she know that that would be his last day of labour due to a hit-and-run incident.Police heard from Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital about a man brought in an injured condition. Deepak succumbed to his injuries after a Mercedes hit him near Jahangirpuri bus stand on Outer Ring Road and fled, police said on Tuesday. His damaged scooty was found near the overbridge. The car was subsequently traced, and a notice under Section 133 of the Motor Vehicles Act was served on its registered owner. While the driver, Ansh Pratap Singh, was granted bail, cops are probing nine challans against him, including dangerous driving.

A co-passenger was present with him at the time of the accident. The accused works with his father, who owns a business. “His father is a contractor with MCD,” police said.

An FIR under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of BNS has been registered.Meanwhile, Deepak, who hails from Modinagar, was the sole breadwinner of his family. He is survived by his wife, their 18-year-old son, Vansh, and their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Aanchal.

“He earned an honest living. His only dream was to give us the life he never had growing up,” said Geeta. “He would make multiple trips no matter how heavy the tiles were because the scooty was his only mode of transportation.

“Our son was preparing to apply to colleges, but now we don’t even know if we’ll be able to continue living in Delhi. Even paying our monthly rent of Rs 5,000 will be difficult,” she said. The family had been planning a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi to pray for their son’s future. “My daughter is so young that she doesn’t understand where her father has gone. She keeps asking about him. The driver is already out on bail, but I just want justice for my family,” Geeta said.
