Dehradun: A 64-year-old woman was killed in a leopard attack in Banasi Talli village of Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district on Saturday morning. According to villagers, a group of women had gone to collect fodder in the upper reaches of the village when the leopard suddenly attacked Sushila Devi and killed her on the spot.
The other women raised an alarm, following which villagers rushed to the area.Officials said no further sighting of the leopard was reported after the attack.Divisional forest officer Mahatim Yadav said the forest department had launched efforts to trace the animal and secure the area. “Many people gathered at the spot. We are trying to cordon off the area and carry out an investigation into the incident. We are also taking steps to track the leopard and have installed a cage to trap it.
The postmortem examination is yet to be conducted,” Yadav said.The incident comes weeks after another fatal leopard attack in the district. Earlier in June, 55-year-old Prabha Devi was killed in Kot block while collecting fodder near her home. Her body was later recovered from an abandoned structure around 200 metres from the site of the attack.According to forest department data, at least 14 people have been killed and around 30 injured in leopard attacks in Uttarakhand so far this year. The department recorded 18 deaths in 2025, 15 in 2024 and 18 in 2023. Pauri Garhwal, Almora, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag and Tehri remain among the major conflict hotspots.
