At least seven people were killed in a devastating bus accident and the subsequent fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Dausa district on Wednesday.
Of the seven victims, five were charred to death after the bus caught fire, while two others succumbed to severe head injuries sustained in the crash, according to news agency PTI.
The accident took place near Dhanawda under the Kolwa police station area in the early hours of Wednesday when a passenger bus rammed into a truck travelling ahead of it. The impact triggered a massive fire that engulfed both vehicles, sparking panic among passengers.
According to the latest update, there were 39 passengers on board the bus.
Twenty-two injured passengers were rescued from the vehicle, with most of them suffering burn injuries.
The injured were rushed to Dausa District Hospital, while several critically injured passengers were referred to higher medical centres for advanced treatment.
BUS WAS TRAVELLING FROM RISHIKESH TO INDORE
Dausa Superintendent of Police Piyush Dixit told PTI that the bus was travelling from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand to Indore in Madhya Pradesh when it collided with a truck moving ahead on the expressway.
“The bus was travelling from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand to Indore in Madhya Pradesh when it collided with a truck moving ahead of it on the expressway," Dixit said.
He added that five passengers were charred to death in the blaze, while two others died due to severe head injuries. According to police, the bus was operated by Hans Travels of Indore.
PASSENGERS WERE ASLEEP WHEN CRASH OCCURRED
ANI reported that the accident occurred between 2 am and 3 am near a rest area under the Kolwa police station limits. According to police, the bus lost control after hitting the trailer and plunged into a roadside gorge. Shortly after the crash, a fire broke out in the rear portion of the bus.
Most passengers were asleep when the accident took place. Eyewitnesses told ANI that the force of the collision threw passengers sleeping on the upper berths onto those below, leaving several of them seriously injured. Women and children were also among the injured.
Eyewitness Anita Soni, who was travelling on the bus, told ANI, “Most passengers were in deep sleep when the accident took place, leaving them with little time to react."
Some passengers managed to escape from the bus before the fire spread, while others were rescued by police, emergency personnel and local residents.
GREEN CORRIDOR CREATED FOR INJURED
Police, ambulance services, fire brigade personnel and local residents launched rescue operations soon after receiving information about the accident. Authorities also created a green corridor to ensure that the injured were transported to Dausa District Hospital without delay.
According to ANI, Additional Superintendent of Police Yogendra Faujdar, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Kumar, Kotwali Station House Officer Bhagwan Sahay Sharma, Sub-Divisional Officer Sanju Meena and Tehsildar Gajanan Meena visited the district hospital to review the treatment of the injured. The officials directed doctors to ensure proper medical care for all those admitted.
The blaze was later brought under control by the fire brigade.
INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY
Police have seized the bus and the truck involved in the accident and launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest the bus went out of control after colliding with the truck, though the exact cause of the accident is yet to be established.
Traffic on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway was affected for some time following the crash before normal movement was restored. Authorities are continuing their investigation into one of the deadliest road accidents reported on the expressway in recent months.
