Police in Lunawada have arrested a 70-year-old man accused of raping his 26-year-old relative with a mental disability. The case has raised concern locally as investigators pursue charges under sexual assault and disability laws.

A 70-year-old man has been arrested in Gujarat’s Mahisagar district for allegedly raping his 26-year-old relative, a woman with a mental disability, police said.
The incident was reported in Lunawada town, where the accused, a neighbour and extended family member of the survivor, is alleged to have lured her to his home when she was alone. According to the complaint filed at Lunawada police station, the man took advantage of the situation and sexually assaulted her inside his house.
Police said the accused had allegedly ensured privacy before the incident by sending his wife out, after which he locked the door and carried out the assault. The survivor was also allegedly threatened not to disclose the incident.
The woman later informed her mother, who approached the police and filed a complaint. Acting on the report, officers registered a case and arrested the accused. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the investigation but confirmed that the case is being pursued under relevant sections of law concerning sexual assault and offences against persons with disabilities.
The incident has sparked concern in the local community. Police said they are continuing their investigation.
