An 80-year-old woman was allegedly gang raped and robbed while on her routine evening walk near Panrutti in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu.

The woman, who lives with her son, is known to go for walks in the morning and evening. On Monday evening, while she was out walking, a group of men reportedly intercepted and abducted her. According to police sources, the men took her to a secluded location, gagged her, allegedly raped her and robbed her of gold jewellery weighing approximately 8 g.

Local residents found the woman unconscious and rushed her to the District Government Hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

The Panrutti Police have begun an investigation into the incident.

In a similar incident, on June 12, a 60-year-old differently abled Dalit woman was allegedly raped and robbed by a person with a known criminal record in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. The accused, identified as Fairoz Yasin Yaragatti, aged 23, was later shot in the leg by police during an encounter after he allegedly attacked officers while attempting to flee.

The incident occurred when the woman, a resident of Dandeli, was walking to a relative’s house. She was abducted and assaulted, following which she lodged a complaint at the Dandeli Town Police Station. During the course of the investigation, the police showed her photographs of nearly 100 suspects, and she identified Yaragatti as the perpetrator.

Fairoz Yaragatti, a resident of Bailpar in Dandeli, is a history-sheeter with a criminal background with recorded offences related to illegal liquor trade, ganja peddling, and abuse and assault of police officers. He was reportedly working as a driver and sand transporter.
