At least 89 students of the Devarapalli Tribal Welfare Ashram Higher Secondary Boys’ School in Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram district fell seriously ill after consuming breakfast, consisting of idlis and chutney, according to police.
A total of 255 students had breakfast at the tribal welfare school, after which several children complained of vomiting and stomach pain, Rampachodavaram Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sai Prashant told news agency PTI.
Acting swiftly, the school staff, along with 108 ambulance EMT Prem Kumar and pilot Nagesh, shifted 18 students to the Maredumilli Primary Health Centre and the remaining 71 to the Rampachodavaram Area Hospital, where they received treatment.
District Medical and Health Officer Sarita, District Tribal Welfare Officer Rukmangadayya, and Maredumilli SI Srinivasa Rao inspected the school, collected food and drinking water samples, and spoke with the students regarding the matter. Local leaders, including the sarpanch and coalition representatives, also reviewed the situation.
CM Orders Probe
Police said all affected students have been diagnosed with mild food poisoning, and none is in serious condition. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also reviewed the incident with senior officials and directed continuous monitoring of the students.
He ordered the district collector to submit a detailed report on the incident and instructed officials to take strict action against those responsible for negligence. Project Officer Smaran Raj said show-cause notices were issued to Headmaster Nageswara Rao and Warden Ganapathi, and directions were given to the Deputy Director.
Rampachodavaram MLA Shirishadevi warned of strict action against the school authorities. A case had been registered in connection with the matter and food samples were sent for forensic analysis to ascertain contamination.
