NEET aspirant’s disturbing habit alarms younger brother; internet reacts

The way young people are engaging with AI chatbots is becoming a growing topic of discussion. What was once seen as a simple digital tool is now turning into a regular part of everyday life for many.

From casual chats to more personal interactions, the use of AI is changing how people spend their time, especially among those who are often at home and alone.A recent Reddit post has brought this shift into focus. In the post, a 17-year-old boy shared his concern about his elder sister, who is preparing for NEET but spends most of her day on AI chatbot apps.

Heavy screen time raises red flags

According to the brother, this pattern has been going on for several months now.

He said his sister is almost constantly on her phone, even during times when she is supposed to be attending lectures.

Reddit post

“I noticed that since the last 7-8 months, she has always been on her phone. Even during lectures, she is on her phone chatting with AI bots. She is mostly at home, so she is kind of lonely,” the user wrote in a Reddit post.

Studies take a backseat

The brother also mentioned that his sister has only recently started studying seriously.

At the same time, her involvement with AI chats has increased and become more personal.“Her average screentime is like 9-10 hours, mostly on these apps. She has a crush on a singer and keeps doing his roleplays. She concerns me, but it's sooo awkward and intimate. I don't know how to bring this up.”

Behavioural changes at home

Apart from her routine, the boy also spoke about changes in her behaviour. He shared that she often reacts strongly over small matters, which has affected their relationship at home.“She crashes out really often and hits or beats me over little things. She's so messed up; I feel sorry for her, and I have also started to hate her in a way. Her situation is beyond repair. Addressing it is so awkward for me. I honestly don't know what to do or if I should do anything at all.”

Social media users offer suggestions

The post quickly gained attention online, with many users sharing their views and advice. Several people suggested that the brother should try to have a calm and understanding conversation with his sister.“Try to talk to her. Constant failures have made her numb, it seems. She is mentally exhausted. Make her do something else,” said one user, while another added, “You need to approach her and talk to her about this like a mature man, otherwise she'll ruin this attempt and might end up regretting this after a few weeks.”Some users also questioned how people interact with AI chatbots.“How do people even talk with AI? When I ask ChatGPT something, it does so much unnecessary glazing, “You're absolutely right,” blah blah; it feels so cringe.”Others suggested stricter steps to reduce her screen time.“Go cold turkey. Seriously. Tell her to throw the phone away. It'll be difficult in the beginning, like an addict showing withdrawal symptoms, but that's the ONLY way. Tell her to go for a run or a walk in the morning every day without fail. If she has friends, tell her to call her friends, not text.”Disclaimer: The Times of India has not independently verified the claims made in the Reddit post.
