Cybercrimes related to women that have been reported on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) have crossed 9.54 lakh over five years, with 2025 recording the highest annual tally in both major categories, according to data tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Across two broad categories, sexual content-related crimes and online/social media crimes, incidents have surged.

The online and social media related crime category alone logged 1,73,766 incidents in 2025, up from 72,301 in 2021, a rise of over 140 per cent in four years.

This averaged about 524 cases per day over the last five years, based on official data tabled in Parliament.

This translates to roughly two complaints every five minutes, highlighting the scale and persistence of the problem. With 2025 recording the highest annual figures, the data suggests both rising incidents and improved reporting, underscoring growing digital risks alongside expanding enforcement efforts.

The categories covering child sexual abuse material, rape-related content and sexually obscene material, recorded 76,657 incidents in 2025, its highest in the five-year window, after dipping to 40,066 in 2023. Within this category, incidents related to Rape/Gang Rape sexually abusive content saw a dramatic fall from 30,574 in 2022 to just 4,261 in 2024, a drop of 86 per cent, before rising again to 8,780 in 2025, a trend the Government’s reply does not explain.

The sharpest sustained rise was in Child Pornography/CSAM incidents reported on NCRP, which grew nearly five-fold from 2,109 in 2021 to 10,431 in 2025. Fake and Impersonating Profiles nearly tripled from 15,843 to 46,784, while Cyber Bullying, Stalking, and Sexting more than doubled from 21,589 to 45,832. Profile Hacking and Identity Theft peaked at 38,297 in 2024 before declining slightly to 34,533 in 2025.

Government cites infrastructure and training as response

The MHA told Parliament it had released Rs 132.93 crore under the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) Scheme, commissioning Cyber Forensic-cum-Training Laboratories in 33 States and UTs and training more than 24,600 LEA personnel, prosecutors, and judicial officers. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) operates the NCRP portal, a Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre, and the CyTrain online learning platform, through which 1,42,025 certificates have been issued to over 1,51,081 registered police and judicial officers as of January 31, 2026.

Arrests rising, but so are complaints

The Samanvaya platform, MHA’s inter-agency coordination and data analytics tool has facilitated the arrest of 21,857 accused and handled over 1,49,636 cyber investigation assistance requests.

The National-Digital Investigation Support Centre in New Delhi has assisted in more than 13,417 cases till January 31, 2026.
