At least nine people died in Punjab’s Ferozpur after a pickup truck, carrying 28 passengers, had a head-on collision with a trailer. The accident, which occurred on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road during the early hours of Wednesday, also left several injured who are presently undergoing treatment.

Sources close to the development told India Today that the victims, consisting of a family and their close relatives from Jalalabad, were returning home after performing the post-cremation rituals of an elderly female relative when the collision took place. The impact of the crash was so severe that four individuals—three men and one woman—died on the spot, while four others succumbed to their injuries soon after.

Local police and senior administration officials rushed to the scene to supervise rescue operations. Emergency responders shifted the injured passengers to a nearby hospital, where several critically injured victims were subsequently referred to a specialised medical facility in Faridkot for advanced treatment.

The police have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Meanwhile, heartbroken family members gathered at the site, inconsolable over the sudden loss of their loved ones.

Expressing deep resentment, residents pointed out that this particular stretch of the Ferozepur-Fazilka highway has turned into an accident blackspot, witnessing numerous fatal crashes in recent years. Angered by the recurring loss of lives, locals have urged the government to widen the narrow highway soon to prevent further accidents in the future.
