Since that day, Gajendra was no longer part of the grand celebrations. He was branded violent and moved away from the spotlight into a life of distance and caution.

There was a time when Gajendra walked like a king. Crowds would gather, cameras would rise, and the air would thicken with a quiet awe as he moved through the grand procession of Mysuru Dasara.

With his towering frame, long tusks and unhurried, dignified stride, Gajendra was not just another elephant. He was a presence, a memory in motion. But, that was years ago.

Today, at 63, Gajendra’s story has taken a quieter turn. After years of living in isolation, the elephant from the Budipadaga camp in Chamarajanagar has finally been moved to the Mattigodu elephant camp in Nagarahole, Kodagu district.

For those who know his past, this transfer is more like a long-overdue ending to a lonely chapter.

The Day Everything Changed

Gajendra had participated in the iconic Dasara celebrations more than 15 times. In Chamarajanagar’s K Gudi camp, he was once the centre of attention. His presence carried weight, both literal and symbolic. But, everything changed on March 18, 2015.

During a musth phase, a period when male elephants experience heightened aggression, Gajendra attacked and killed another elephant, Shriram, and a mahout named Ganapati. The incident changed everything.

From that day, Gajendra was no longer part of the grand celebrations. He was branded violent and moved away from the spotlight into a life of distance and caution.

Years in Isolation

What followed were years of solitude. Gajendra remained confined at the K Gudi camp, away from other elephants. In November 2024, after 9 long years, he was shifted to the Budipadaga camp, but the isolation continued.

For an animal that thrives in herds, the silence was not just physical. It was emotional. Elephants are known to be deeply social creatures, forming bonds and relying on group dynamics for comfort and stability. Without that, the years can feel longer than they are.

A Campaign That Found Its Voice

In recent months, those who remembered Gajendra’s earlier days began to speak up.

On social media, a campaign began to take shape. ‘Save Gajendra’ evolved into more than just a hashtag. It was a call to restore a sense of dignity to an ageing elephant who had once stood at the heart of celebration.

Activists and wildlife lovers argued that keeping him isolated was no longer justified. Releasing him into the wild was not an option either. Years in captivity had taken that away from him.

Forest officials and camp staff also observed that Gajendra was withdrawing from other elephants and wasn’t social at all. He was staying away from regular fights or banters even though he was surrounded by fellow pachyderms.

What remained was a middle path. A space where he could live among other elephants, under supervision, without being alone.

Finally, It Began

The appeals reached Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre, who directed officials to shift Gajendra. And so, after years of quiet, the move finally happened. He was transported on a truck. “He was definitely lonely, but not depressed. We have shifted the elephant safely to the Nagarahole camp" said Sripathi, DCF, BRT to media.

At the Mattigodu camp in Nagarahole, Gajendra will now be among other trained elephants. Now, the surroundings are different. The air is different. The silence, perhaps, will be too.

It may not bring back the roar of the Dasara crowds. But it brings something gentler, A second chance at not being alone.
