Mirra Andreeva revealed her great admiration for tennis legend Roger Federer as he watched her play from the Royal Box at Wimbledon on Monday, July 7. The Russian player, who was making her Centre Court debut, advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time by sweeping past American star Emma Navarro.

Speaking to the crowd after the momentous occasion, Andreeva spoke about Federer and how she tried fending off extra nervousness by avoiding looking in his direction as he watched her play, sitting with his wife Mirka.

“Honestly, it’s something crazy. I was super nervous. I really tried my best not to look over there in the Royal Box because I knew I would completely lose my focus," Andreeva said. “I saw Roger and Mirka. It means a lot that you came and watched my match. It’s been one of my dreams to see you in real life [crowd cheers]."

“When I saw you I got really nervous but I’m super happy I managed to keep focused. I just want to say [Federer’s wife] you look really pretty, I really like your outfit."

Andreeva emerged in terrific form as she took on the No.10 seed Navarro and kept herself in the race for a maiden Wimbledon crown by defeating the American 6-2 and 6-3 in a two-set bout. The 18-year-old, who is now the youngest player to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Nicole Vaidisova in 2007, put on an excellent show with her great tempo and quick movements that forced Navarro into uncomfortable spots and defeated her comprehensively.

Making her maiden Centre Court appearance a memorable one, Andreeva played with great focus and intensity. She was so involved that she didn’t even realise when she conquered the Navarro challenge. Andreeva was ahead by love-40 during the ninth game of the second set when she won the final point as Navarro returned a dropshop into the net, leading to the most jubilant scenes for the teenage star. She next takes on Belinda Bencic, who defeated No. 18 Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 and 6-4, for a place in the Wimbledon semifinals on Wednesday, July 9.
