Jordan Henderson turned scorer, storyteller and tribute-maker in one poignant moment on Sunday.

The Brentford midfielder paid an emotional homage to former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota after finding the net in a 1-1 draw against Leeds at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Henderson marked his goal by recreating Jota’s iconic celebration — sitting down and miming a video game — a gesture that instantly resonated with fans.

Jota, who died in a car crash in July at the age of 28 alongside his brother Andre Silva, shared 77 appearances with Henderson at Liverpool.

The celebration carried extra weight: it was Henderson’s first Premier League goal since December 2021 — a 4-1 Merseyside derby win over Everton in which Jota also scored.

“It was his (Jota’s) birthday recently," a visibly emotional Henderson, 35, told Sky Sports. “We will never forget him. I can only imagine what the lads at Liverpool are going through. He was a good friend, and I don’t score many goals, so I wanted to dedicate it to him."

The England international had laid a wreath at Anfield the day after Jota’s death and penned a heartfelt Instagram tribute reflecting on their bond. Sunday’s goal felt like a continuation of that farewell.

Henderson’s low strike, deflected in off Leeds defender Jaka Bijol, also made history. At 35 years and 180 days, he became Brentford’s oldest-ever Premier League goalscorer.

Having returned to English football with Brentford after spells at Al-Ettifaq and Ajax, Henderson has quickly become a key figure. He has made 16 appearances this season and earned glowing praise from manager Keith Andrews.

“Jordan’s experience and knowledge of the game are second to none," Andrews said. “He’s been hugely impactful for us. Long may it continue."
