Rajasthan’s Deputy CM Diya Kumari shares what it means to inherit a legacy, and the responsibility & reinvention that come along with it

Legacy, leadership and the evolving meaning of heritage took centre stage at the Ladies Study Group’s 60th-year celebrations, where Rajasthan Deputy CM Diya Kumari engaged in a thought-provoking conversation with art patron Jaiveer Johal.

Reflecting on the responsibilities of royal inheritance, her journey into public service and the need to preserve tradition while embracing change, she spoke about empowering women artisans through entrepreneurship, revitalising Rajasthan’s cultural heritage and shaping a forward-looking vision.

‘Legacy opens doors, service keeps them open’Born into Jaipur’s royal family, Diya Kumari said her surname brings “recognition and credibility,” but “not respect.”

Influenced by her father’s military career, her grandmother’s Emergency imprisonment and her grandfather’s role in integrating princely states, she underscored accountability: “You cannot simply sit back because you have inherited a legacy. It comes with responsibility and expectations.

” Initially hesitant, she entered politics at Vasundhara Raje’s urging, filing her nomination on the last day. “Once I became an MLA, I realised how much difference you can make. A water connection, a road, or even a school admission can transform lives,” she said.

Preserving tradition, Empowering women Women’s empowerment, Kumari said, is about independence. Her foundation trained women in regional crafts like embroidery, zardozi & block printing, enabling market access. Designers were introduced, alongside training in banking and digital literacy. “We wanted them to become entrepreneurs.” Many now run businesses. “Craft has to evolve,” she added, while outlining plans to boost Rajasthan’s cultural tourism.
