Siddi wrestlers from Karnataka dominate KITG 2026 with three golds and a silver, signalling the rise of a new wrestling powerhouse.

Wrestlers from Karnataka’s Siddi community delivered a standout performance at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, clinching three gold medals and one silver to power the state’s campaign.
For a community of African descent with a population of around 50,000 in India, nearly one-third of whom live in Karnataka, it was a statement.
Out of nine wrestlers representing Karnataka, four were from the Siddi community, and all four reached the podium. Manisha Juava Siddi (76kg), Rohan M. Doddamani (Greco-Roman 60kg) and Princita Pedru Fernandes Siddi (68kg) clinched gold, while Shalina Sayer Siddi (57kg) secured silver.
From Trials to Triumph
What makes their feat even more impressive is consistency — all four had topped the selection trials at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Stadium before carrying that form onto the national stage.
Karnataka coach Mamata highlighted the growing wrestling culture in the region. “Just as Haryana dominates wrestling nationally, the Haliyal region has a similar influence in our state," she said. “There has been a surge in interest among children from the Siddi community."
Stories Behind the Medals
Rohan Doddamani, who hails from Dharwad, lost his father six years ago and was raised by his mother, who works as a school cook. “There are frequent local dangals in our community… Before this, I have competed in senior nationals and university games," he said.
For Shalina, the silver medal is just the beginning. “I missed gold this time, but I will work harder going forward," she said.
Princita’s journey, too, reflects a shift in mindset. “Initially, I wasn’t interested… But seeing others from my community motivated me. Now I train every day to win at the international level."
The Bigger Picture
Officials from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) see this as part of a broader trend. “With proper training and facilities, these athletes can excel internationally," said Maha Singh Rao.
