Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Sunday escalated the political battle over the defection of party MPs, announcing that he has filed a petition before the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and the Vice President of India seeking termination of the membership of seven MPs who merged with the BJP.
“After consulting with all the experts and seeking the opinion of (Independent MP and former Union Law Minister) Kapil Sibal, I have sent a petition to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and the Vice President of India, requesting that the membership of these seven members be completely terminated, as per the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution," Singh said.
“I have also requested the Vice President and the Chairman to hear this matter as soon as possible and issue a just decision on this matter. There are several Supreme Court decisions on this matter. We will fight the legal battle," he added.
TERMS MERGER “ILLEGAL, UNCONSTITUTIONAL"
A day earlier, Singh had strongly criticised the move by the MPs, calling it a violation of constitutional provisions and the anti-defection law.
“Seven people announced joining the BJP in a manner that was unconstitutional, illegal, and against the rules. This is completely wrong legally," he said.
Citing the anti-defection law, Singh added, “The anti-defection law clearly states that any kind of split or factional breakaway is not allowed in the Assembly, Rajya Sabha, or Lok Sabha, and has no constitutional validity."
Reiterating his stand, he said, “The seven Rajya Sabha MPs of the Aam Aadmi Party who have defected, this is illegal, wrong, unconstitutional, and against parliamentary rules."
He further stated that he would formally write to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, requesting the disqualification of the MPs.
“That is why today I will write to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the Hon’ble Vice President, citing all these rules, requesting that the membership of all seven of these Rajya Sabha MPs be terminated completely," Singh said.
DEFECTION TRIGGERS POLITICAL STORM
The development follows a major setback for AAP after seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha, joined the BJP.
Chadha, who had earlier been removed as the party’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, formalised the split and announced that two-thirds of the party’s Upper House members would merge with the BJP.
Singh also alleged that at least three of the MPs were seen visiting the BJP office ahead of their formal induction.
RUBBISHES CLAIMS ON PUNJAB MLAS
Rejecting speculation that several Punjab MLAs were in touch with Raghav Chadha, Singh dismissed the claims as “false propaganda."
“The BJP, Raghav Chadha and others will spread these kinds of false news. These individuals are facing protests throughout Punjab. People are on the streets, shouting slogans against them. Public sentiment is against them for betraying the party and Punjab," he said.
“And secondly, their membership is about to end. So, which MLA will join them? Therefore, this is false propaganda. It’s an attempt to spread confusion. It’s nothing more than that," Singh added.
ALLEGES BJP TARGETING AAP IN GUJARAT
Separately, Singh accused the BJP of targeting AAP’s organisational growth in Gujarat, including alleged action against its social media presence.
Singh said AAP’s posts had garnered massive traction, claiming they were viewed by 8 crore people in just 28 days, which “has unnerved" the BJP.
“The Aam Aadmi Party is steadily expanding in Gujarat and is fighting on the ground on issues concerning the public. The party has five MLAs in Gujarat and secured 14 per cent of the vote in the assembly elections," he said.
He further alleged that several AAP leaders, including Isudan Gadhvi, Gopal Italia and Praveen Ram, were arrested or harassed by authorities.
“Many such individuals have been detained, harassed, and subjected to strict action by the BJP in recent months," Singh said.
Despite this, he asserted that the BJP would not succeed in stopping AAP’s growth and claimed that the people of Gujarat would respond to what he termed “30 years of misrule."
