Trinamool Congress leader and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee was questioned by the West Bengal CID for more than four hours on Thursday in connection with the alleged signature mismatch case linked to a key resolution submitted in the state Assembly.
The prolonged interrogation took place at the CID headquarters in Kolkata after the Calcutta High Court directed Banerjee to appear before investigators in the matter.
According to sources, questioning continued well beyond the four-hour mark as investigators sought answers regarding alleged discrepancies in the signatures of several Trinamool Congress MLAs on a resolution related to appointments to key Opposition posts in the West Bengal Assembly.
What Is the Case About?
The CID is probing allegations that signatures of some Trinamool MLAs on a crucial Assembly resolution did not match their original signatures.
The controversy relates to a resolution concerning appointments to important posts in the Assembly, including the Leader of Opposition and other positions reserved for the Opposition bench. The matter was referred to the CID after discrepancies were reportedly noticed in the signatures submitted with the resolution.
Investigators have collected handwriting samples from several legislators as part of the probe. Preliminary findings reportedly suggested mismatches between signatures on the resolution and the MLAs’ specimen signatures.
Multiple Summons Before Appearance
Banerjee’s appearance came after a series of summons issued by the CID.
The Trinamool Congress national general secretary had earlier sought additional time, citing health concerns and prior commitments, including political engagements in New Delhi. He had skipped earlier summonses, prompting the CID to issue multiple notices and warn of possible legal action if he continued to avoid questioning.
The agency has maintained that Banerjee’s questioning is crucial to establishing the sequence of events surrounding the disputed resolution and the alleged signature discrepancies.
Investigation Continues
Officials have not disclosed details of the questions put to Banerjee or whether he may be called again for further questioning.
The CID investigation remains ongoing, with the agency continuing to examine documents, handwriting samples and statements from legislators linked to the case.
